This past February, Franklin Chapel AME Zion Church gathered in the W.H. Williams Fellowship Hall to honor the retirement of a man whose quiet dedication has meant everything to our church community—Mr. Haywood Rush, who has served faithfully as our caretaker for over 35 years.
It was an afternoon filled with love, gratitude, laughter, and reflection, as family, friends, and church members came together to celebrate a man whose steady hands and servant’s heart have left a lasting mark on our church’s life.
A Lifetime of Steadfast Service
Haywood Rush has been the heartbeat behind so many of the moments we cherish. He has worked tirelessly behind the scenes—making sure the sanctuary was prepared for Sunday service, setting up for weddings, ensuring every funeral was handled with grace and dignity, and even running out for last-minute bags of ice for a repast or gathering.
From mopping floors to unlocking doors, repairing what was broken to anticipating what was needed—Haywood handled it all with humility and care. His service wasn’t just a job. It was a ministry.
He knew this church building like the back of his hand—but more importantly, he cared deeply for the people who walked through its doors.
A Gathering of Gratitude
The celebration, held in the W.H. Williams Fellowship Hall, was warm and personal—fitting for the kind of man Haywood is. There were no choirs or performances, just good food and even better company. One by one, family members, friends, and fellow church members stood up to share their stories and express their appreciation.
His wife, Mrs. Barbara Rush, spoke lovingly about his commitment not only to the church but to their family and faith. His children, nieces, and nephews shared memories of his work ethic, gentle wisdom, and unwavering presence. Members of the Franklin Chapel family added their own tributes—thanking Haywood for always showing up, always saying yes, and always putting others before himself.
Pastor Hayes offered words of appreciation and respect,“Haywood didn’t just take care of this building—he took care of us.”

Not a Goodbye—Just a Well-Earned Rest
Though Haywood is stepping down from his caretaker duties, he made it clear that he’s not going anywhere.
“I may not be sweeping floors anymore, but I’ll still be sitting in the pews,” he said with a familiar smile.
At Franklin Chapel AME Zion, we know how rare it is to witness this kind of faithful, behind-the-scenes service. And we are forever grateful.
Mr. Haywood Rush, thank you. For 35 years of service, sacrifice, and quiet strength—you’ve left a legacy that will echo through this church for generations to come. Enjoy your retirement. You’ve more than earned it.
